The 84th edition of the Magic City Classic is set for Saturday, October 25th, 2025, at Birmingham’s historic Legion Field. The annual showdown between the Alabama State Hornets and the Alabama A&M Bulldogs remains one of the most anticipated events in HBCU football, drawing fans from across the state and beyond for a weekend of tailgating and football.
This year’s Classic features an exciting quarterback matchup that could define the outcome. Alabama State’s Andrew Body, a dynamic dual-threat QB, has brought new energy to the Hornets’ offense this season. Body called his shot before the season began, stating this group will be like the “greatest show on turf,” and he has definitely led the charge. His ability to extend plays with his legs and deliver accurate throws on the run has made him an unstoppable force for opposing defenses. His poise under pressure and playmaking in crucial moments have been key to Alabama State’s dynamic offense this season.
On the other side, Alabama A&M’s Cornelious Brown IV brings experience and a strong arm to the Bulldogs’ passing attack. Brown has been a major key in orchestrating A&M’s high-powered offense. His chemistry with the Bulldogs’ receiving corps and his ability to stretch the field vertically will be a big test for the Hornets’ secondary.
The sideline chess match between Alabama State’s Eddie Robinson Jr. and Alabama A&M’s Sam Shade adds another layer of intrigue. Robinson, a Hornets legend and former NFL linebacker, has instilled a tough, disciplined culture in Montgomery.
Sam Shade, meanwhile, has revitalized the Bulldogs with his own brand of intensity and passion. As a former NFL defensive back, Shade emphasizes aggressive play and accountability. His offense has unlocked new dimensions for A&M, making the Bulldogs a threat to score from anywhere on the field.
Both coaches understand the magnitude of the Classic—not just as a football game, but as a cultural event that unites communities, their fan bases, and showcases HBCU excellence. Coach Robinson is 3-0 at the Classic, and Coach Shade, who has beaten his counterpart before as the head coach at Miles College, looks to put a damper on his undefeated record at this signature game.
Beyond bragging rights, the 2025 Magic City Classic carries huge SWAC implications with both teams having no margin for error. Bama State needs to win out and hope Jackson State stumbles down the stretch, while A&M needs a lot more to happen to keep their hopes alive in the conference.
